Meet the Cows

  • Freeda

    Birthday: June 2019

    Rescued: July 2019

Freeda was rescued with her half sister, Star, from a dairy farm in Vermont. They were living chained to walls only a foot away from their mothers, unable to touch or be loved. They also did not get nutrition from their mothers’ milk. Freeda is a Lineback/Ayrshire cross.

When she came home to PEAK, Freeda had bald spots all along her backside from licking herself excessively due to stress. Freeda is a little older than Star and, as a result, has taken on a big sister role by showing Star how to be courageous. Freeda and Star love to run and spend time under their favorite shade tree in the summer. Freeda is very affectionate, curious, and loves to give (a million) kisses.

  • Star

    Birthday: June 2019

    Rescued: July 2019

Star was rescued with her half sister, Freeda, from a dairy farm in Vermont. They were living chained to walls only a foot away from their mothers, unable to touch or be loved. They also did not get nutrition from their mothers’ milk (colostrom has the antibodies needed to be healthy, just like for us humans from our mothers).

Star was only 2 weeks old when she was rescued. She was still wobbly. Star is a Jersey breed. We are so thrilled that Freeda and Star have each other, as well as their brothers Zeke, Vegan and Wilson. Star is a bit more shy, but as she grows she becomes more confident and sure of herself. Freeda and Star love to run and spend time under their favorite shade tree in the summer.

  • Vegan

    Birthday: June 2015

    Rescued: December 2015

Vegan was rescued from an Iowa farm in December, 2015. He’s a Black Angus, typically brought into the world to become “meat.” Vegan sustained a major injury to his back right leg which went untreated for months, but ended up saving his life and getting him off that farm.

Vegan was PEAK’s first cow resident. He has since been joined by Wilson, Zeke, Freeda and Star. Finally, Vegan has his own little herd. Vegan was shy when he first arrived and slowly warmed up to his human caretakers. He loves having his ears rubbed and the top of his head scratched. Vegan is a bit reserved and can take a little time to warm up to humans. He’s curious, especially about cats and roosters!

  • Zeke

    Birthday: September 2016

    Rescued: May 2017

Zeke came home to PEAK on Mother’s Day!. He had a rough start in life but luckily was rescued young. Zeke was taken from his mother too soon but found a paternal figure in his inseparable companion, Wilson. The two are almost always physically touching. The duo was rescued by the ASPCA with more than 1,000 other animals. Zeke (with intensive care) recovered quickly at PEAK. He is playful and very affectionate. Zeke and Wilson spend their days with Vegan, Freeda and Star. Zeke loves to lick and rub his head against someone’s leg (this can be exciting, due to his large size!!). Zeke is a fun-loving guy. We’re grateful that he gets to grow up in a loving home with plenty of green pasture, a pond, lots of fresh hay, and surrounded by friends.
