Just next door to the sanctuary, a fire has devastated our neighbor and community and taken the lives of a number of the animals living on their property. We went to their place immediately to offer food, water, and help. We are heartbroken for those we lost and doing everything we can to help care for and comfort the survivors. Our team—alongside the Owen County Humane Society and Willowbrook Farms Animal Sanctuary—started working through the smolder and debris to catch as many surviving birds as possible, including this sweet mama and her 13 babies we found fending for themselves out in the open.
We have returned to the property everyday to rescue as many of the birds as we can. This is the biggest rescue PEAK has led, and we are acting on the fly to save as many lives as possible. While we work to find additional permanent homes for many of the individuals, we are also housing and caring for this emergency influx of new animals. So far, we have brought home 41 individuals. We are assessing injuries to provide immediate care when we can and veterinary care when we can’t. We will continue our search for survivors until we are sure no one is left.
